Heritage

Thomas Burberry opened a store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856, aged 21. He introduced gabardine in 1879, a water-resistant yet breathable fabric. The trench coat was developed during the First World War for British officers and later became popular with civilians.

Signature design

The Burberry check has been used since at least the 1920s, mainly as a trench coat lining. The Equestrian Knight logo was developed in 1901 with the Latin word Prorsum and registered as a trademark in 1909. It returned in a February 2023 rebrand.

Company today

It is headquartered in London and listed on the London Stock Exchange in the FTSE 100. Daniel Lee became chief creative officer in September 2022, and Joshua Schulman became CEO in July 2024.
