Born Samuel Albert Bozeman Jr. on 30 August 1924 in Haynesville, Louisiana, he died on 28 September 2004 in New York City, aged 80. He founded Geoffrey Beene, Inc. in New York City.

• In his 1970 collection he used inexpensive fabrics such as sweatshirt and denim for evening dresses.
• He won his first Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award in 1964, and his eighth in 1982 was the most awarded to any one designer.
• CFDA Designer of the Year in 1986 and a Special Award for Fashion as Art in 1988.

Licensing and the brand

His cologne Grey Flannel launched in 1975. PVH acquired the brand in 2018, and it was sold to Authentic Brands Group in 2021.
