Traditionally, ladies don’t wear kilts, but they wear tartan dresses or pleated skirts. Due to the high number of students, some bars and clubs in the city are pretty darn lax when it comes to the dress code, but in others, guests have to dress a bit more on the “smart” side of smart casual. Unlike Wales and Scotland, England does not have an official national costume.

What is the traditional dress in England?
Although there is no national costume for England, there is plenty to discover in Scotland, Ireland and Wales. If you receive an invitation that doesn’t include details of clothing requirements, call your host and ask. The Learning English Network states that Scottish national clothing for men includes not only a kilt, but also a shirt, vest and tweed jacket. The kilt and tartan are both famous parts of national dress in Scotland, although the tartan is also part of the Welsh national costume.
If you really do historical research, you’ll often find that they’re not that old or traditional.
