For young people starting out with makeup, simple, gentle habits matter more than a long product list. The tips below draw on guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Choose skin-friendly products
The AAD says makeup is generally fine but some products cause acne cosmetica, small bumps or pimples that can take from a few days to six months to appear. Look for labels such as oil-free, non-comedogenic or will not clog pores.
Build a gentle routine
- Remove all makeup, including eye makeup, before bed with an oil-free remover, then wash gently without scrubbing.
- Apply with a light touch, using brushes if you prefer.
- Wash brushes weekly.
Keep eye makeup hygienic
The FDA says some industry experts recommend replacing mascara three months after purchase because of microbes picked up during use. Never add water or saliva to dried mascara, and throw it away if it dries out. Stop using eye makeup and see a doctor if you develop an eye infection.
Do not share
Sharing makeup or applicators can pass on bacteria, pink eye or cold sores, so use your own products and a fresh applicator at a store tester.
If you notice breakouts, stop the new product and speak to a dermatologist or pharmacist.
