Some handbags have become icons because of their design and the stories behind them. Here are two of the best documented, based on Wikipedia.
Chanel 2.55
Coco Chanel updated a 1929 handbag in February 1955, and the bag took its name from that date. It has a double-chain shoulder strap that keeps the hands free, a quilted exterior, a zippered compartment inside the front flap, a back flap for money and a burgundy lining. It originally had the Mademoiselle lock, and an exact copy was released in 2005 for the 50th anniversary.
Hermès Birkin
Hermès introduced the Birkin in 1984. It was inspired by British-French actress Jane Birkin, who wanted a bag big enough for scripts and diapers. Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas sketched a supple, spacious design on the spot. Each bag is made by a single craftsman in about 15 to 20 hours, and the craftsman signs it.
