A fashion accessory contributes in a secondary manner to an outfit. Wikipedia loosely divides them into two groups.
Carried accessories
These include purses and handbags, hand fans, parasols and umbrellas, wallets, canes and ceremonial swords.
Worn accessories
These include ties, hats, belts, gloves, necklaces, bracelets, watches, eyewear, scarves, shawls, socks, pins, rings and hair ties. Wikipedia does not count shoes, boots or sneakers as accessories.
Why accessories matter
Accessories often complete an outfit and complement the wearer’s look, and they can express identity and personality. The term came into use in the 16th century.
